my comfort zone

Since being a little squirt, I’ve had a love for the great outdoors. Starting in kindergarten, I was a Girl Scout on my mom’s troop, #1481, for 8 years!. We camped in cabins, yurts, and tents all over forest preserves in Illinois and Kentucky. I thrived in pitching tents, stitching lanyards, starting fires, finding North with no compass, and I had many hiking and campfire songs in my repertoire!

As a 22-year-old, I continue to camp whenever my free time allows me to! The past two summers I’ve tent camped in Utah, Arizona, Michigan, and Central Illinois. In all these camping trips a thought stirred my brain, I wasn’t truly alone with the great outdoors because I never slept away from the security of my car … A car provides a few comforting features while camping: light, air conditioning, shelter, storage, electricity for charging devices, and transportation.

So, this summer I personally challenged myself to hike into the wilderness with all my belongings on my back, and camp without the security of sleeping next to my car!
